Obesity: Is Goldilocks and the Three Bears really to blame?
By Larry Seitz | November 10, 2007
A theory on sleeping and obesity has been publicized. If you sleep longer, you eat less. That seems logical. I mean, how can you eat if you’re sleeping? Right? At least that’s what we’re being told by researchers, who discovered this in their initial study of over 9,000 people between 1982-1984. They concluded that the less you sleep the greater chances you have of developing obesity.
It’s now known that sleep deprivation, which causes weight gain, can be a result of insulin sensitivity and levels of two appetite hormone cousins. Leptin, which works to control the appetite whereas Ghrelin serves as an appetite stimulant.
One researcher theorized that we store fat in the shorter nights of summer preparing for the long nights of winter. Sounds like an excuse for a limitless barbeque to me. I would think it’s tough to grill fatty foods swimming in greasy sugar laden marinade if you’re sleeping.
Lets see where a heroine of my youth fits into the equation. Goldilocks decides to take a walk in the forest. That’s good. Being active…something healthy. Way to go, Goldie! She sees a house. That’s a good thing because she realizes she needs to use the facilities so boldly she knocks on the door. Guess what? No one answers and the need is building. What do you think she does? You’re right! In she walks. Okay…so she’s in the house. No! It can’t be. That odor! She’s hooked. Too late! Her absolute favorite! (Of course other than a fresh green salad or fruit bowl.) PORRIDGE! She is definitely entrapped. What a dilemma…the craving…it overwhelms her and three bowls later…insulin sensitivity sets in…glycemic index shoots up. A real nightmare! And now to make it worse with the instant blotting…the weight gain…she sits down and breaks the little chair. What a mess. But, right now, she REALLY needs to find the bathroom. She runs up the stairs…sort of. Aha, she sees her destination. Finally, some moments later, emerging with a relieved sigh, she surveys the upstairs. But alas, no Internet wireless hook up and overwhelmed by an allergic fatigue overload she falls asleep on the bed. The rest is simple. Bears come home. Sleep deprivation, she avoids confrontation, runs away…well walks fast, food doesn’t digest properly, and she’s on her way to a life of obesity.

You draw your own conclusions. Let me know what you think. Goldilocks might need some advice.
